25 years serving Santa Barbara homeschooling families
Acerca de HomeBased Partnership
Hay 67 niños enrolados desde TK al 8vo. grado. Este grupo esteem dividido aproximadamente en dos mitades, con cada grupo asistiendo a Open Day un día por semana de 10:00 a 2:30. Each Open Day offers the children the chance to spend time with other children. All students participate in 20-minute circle times led by their lead teacher. Children are also given the opportunity during Open Day to work with specialists who lead activities in a variety of subject areas. Four certificated staff work with the children to administer the program, in collaboration with the parents.
HBP also offers three sessions of specialist-led classes throughout the year that allow for a wide array of activities, in-depth learning opportunities across all subject areas, and different social experiences. Classes may be designated for specific or mixed age groups, and are generally limited to 10 children.
At HBP each family establishes a unique approach and maintains parental flexibility in curriculum use, while demonstrating that each child is making progress toward grade-level. Every week, families are required to turn in weekly records and samples of the work they’ve done at home the previous week. HBP has many resources that families can borrow from lending library (including hands-on materials, kits, resource books, some textbooks, DVDs, etc.).
The HBP program provides support and oversight by certified supervising staff members who are responsible to make sure that the student’s educational program is fulfilled. They are available to offer suggestions and help you connect with other families who are taking an approach similar to yours, or who are familiar with things that you are interested in learning about.
Our Guiding Principles
In 2009, the families and staff of the HomeBased Partnership unanimously approved this mission statement for the program, as well as the four following vision statements that name specific components and goals of the program:
- HomeBased Partnership is a collaboration between children, parents and staff who form a community of support for homeschooling families. We work together to sustain an environment of trust, respect and safety. We share responsibility for decision-making, problem solving and the implementation of the program.
- HomeBased Partnership encourages multi-age interactions that enrich relationships and community. Some activities are designed for the specific interests, ages and abilities of our children. Family participation is a vital aspect of our program.
- HomeBased Partnership families maintain responsibility for the education of their children. It is the domain of each individual family to decide how best to educate their children, and no specific methodology or curriculum is required, though children are expected to make progress toward grade level.
- HomeBased Partnership supports many different learning styles and educational paths, while operating within the guidelines of a public school independent study program.
HomeBased Partnership strives to provide social opportunities and play, a variety of enrichment activities and classes, and an abundance of materials available on site and for home use. The group comes together in a variety of ways for informal mentoring and as a resource network.
STATE CERTIFIED STAFFAt HomeBased Partnership, your children, and their needs, are served by our certified, professional educators, some of them homeschoolers themselves.
MARIANE KRUIDENIERMarianne’s relationship with HBP began in 1998 when her son, Logan, was enrolled as a first grader. In 2000, she became a teacher at HBP both on Open Days as well as elective class days. She has a Single Subject Credential in English, and a Multi-Subject Credential. She loves crafts, art, writing, games, gardening, and animals. “My favorite part of HBP is the kids!”
STACEY CABALLEROStacey has been teaching at Santa Barbara Charter School since 2003. She has a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from UCSB with a supplementary credential in Science. Her passion is spending time in nature and learning about animals. She enjoys camping with her husband and 2 young kids in the Sierra each summer, fostering their own connection to the natural world. “I believe in a parent-child cooperative model for education. HBP allows me to support each child’s first teacher, their parents, in achieving academic goals.”
MARCIE KIOLLERMarcie Kjoller has been teaching at the HomeBased Partnership since 2005. She attended UCSB where she earned her BA, a Coaching Certificate, and her teaching credential, all the while swimming on the UCSB swim team. After teaching in a traditional classroom for six years, she took time off to be with her two daughters. Eager to get back to teaching again, Marianne introduced her to the HomeBased Partnership. They had known each other from their days working as Zoo Camp Counselors at the Santa Barbara Zoo! Marcie believes that, “The HomeBased Partnership is a magical place. It is filled with a diverse group of families who all value spending time together. The parents’ priorities are their children. I love getting to spend my “work days” with happy children who have the freedom and time to discover their world.”
MEGAN ROBERTSONI’m Megan Robertson and I have lived in Santa Barbara since 1985. My husband, Marty, and I have three kids with whom we love to camp and travel. I have homeschooled our kids at HBP since 2002. I taught in a traditional classroom at Carpinteria Middle School in the mid-‘90’s and then took a break when our son was born in 1997. Even as a teacher, I felt intimidated stepping into homeschooling in 2002. I was so glad to have a community of people to share the experience, to learn from, and most of all, to be a positive learning and growing environment for my children. I made the shift from being a parent and substitute to parent and regular staff at HBP in the fall of 2014. I love my role as teacher, supporter, and friend of kids and families at HBP.
